Description
Angels of Suderac & The Physics of EmpathyShared Program
Angels of Suderac is a contemporary dance performance for six dancers created by Croatian American choreographer Kate Foley working in collaboration with five contemporary dancers from Zagreb: Sandra Banic, Rini Kotor, Sonja Pregrad, Zrinka Simicic and Liljana Zagorec.
Angels of Suderac is a co-production of Studenski Centar-Teatr &TD-Kultura Promjene, and is funded by the American Embassy in Zagreb, Office for Culture of the City of Zagreb and the FACE Croatia Foundation.
In Angels of Suderac Foley mixes contemporary dance with invented archaic folkdance inspired by her investigations into the 17th century witch trial documentation on the vilenice (fairy cult healers) of Janjina, autobiographical material and her experience with American popular dance culture.
Zoran Cica, ethnologist, plays the role of a narrator, highlighting new research on the psychedelic shamanism of the vilenice. Composer and rock guitar virtuoso Adam Semijalac's hypnotic score mixes contemporary rhythms with recordings of his grandparents' voices. Prize winning dramaturge Luka Rukavina and editor Jelena Mordic collaborate with Foley and filmmaker Tom Rukavina, whose projected dance footage shot on location at Sudjerac combines horror movie tropes with breathtaking Dalmatian landscapes. Costumes designed by Davorka Dugacki Medvesek, lighting design by Miljenko Bengez, sound design by Nikolas Cikos.
The Physics of Empathy
The duet by Pregrad and Wells will mix highly physical dancing along with deconstructive questions and ponderings. The questions the artists begin with are "what is the nature of watching performance?" and "why do people like what they like?" In reference to the title (Physics of Empathy): Is watching dance a physical experience? Does it include something we could call physical empathy? And, as we intend to display some athletic virtuosity, we consider, "what is the attraction of virtuosity?" There's an old adage; "virtue is its own reward." Well, is virtuosity its own reward?
