Amy Ellingson: Iterations and Assertions

Iterations and Assertions is a solo exhibition of work by San Francisco-based artist Amy Ellingson. Ellingson’s process involves borrowing, distorting, manipulating and re-contextualizing simple, basic forms in order to create a complex field of information.

All the works in Iterations and Assertions refer to two large, oil and encaustic paintings that will be installed side-by-side, spanning 28 feet. The panels are near-mirror images of each other, setting the tone for a backward/forward, upside-down/inside-out experience of perception. A site-specific mural will be executed on the opposite wall of the gallery extending nearly 40 feet. The mural design is a “wireframe” interpretation of the imagery in the paintings. Rendered in subtle tones of grey, the composition is compressed and convoluted. A third major component of the exhibition is a sculptural version of the paintings. Ellingson has translated individual elements from the paintings into three-dimensional objects. They are rough crude imaginings that, according to Ellingson resemble “artifacts, or debris, liberated from the vertical plane.”

Amy Ellingson’s work has been exhibited nationally. She is the recipient of the 2009 Fleishhacker Foundation Eureka Fellowship and the 1999 Artadia Grant to Individual Artists and has been awarded fellowships at the MacDowell Colony, the Ucross Foundation, and the Civitella Ranieri Foundation. Her work is held in various public and corporate collections, including the Crocker Art Museum, the Oakland Museum of California, the San Jose Museum of Art, The Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, and the U.S. Embassies in Tunisia and Algeria. She currently lives and works in San Francisco.
