About
Alma is the just-opened Nuevo Latin American place where Rooster once sat on the corner across from Boogaloos and the Latin America Club. We had a very sophisticated little dinner for four with two bottles of wine (a spicy Portuguese red and a jammy Argentinian Bonarda) for just over $40 per person, which is pretty good considering the high price of finery these days. Highlights included the smoky corn arepas, these little pancakes make of sweet corn topped with goat cheese, and the chocolate-jalapeno gelato. Main courses like savory halibut with achiote roasted potatoes and grilled pork chops with scallion mashers and shoestring plantain fries are in the $15 range, while less filling apps like huachinango snapper ceviche and cuban bread salad with arugula and manchego cheese go for $3-$8. The chef has a delicate style and presents interesting ingredients from all over Latin America.
