With the holidays right around the corner it can be easy to get caught up in the idea of feasts and glitzy decorations but the folks over at Reaching Out Food Center are making a huge difference in the lives of thousands this holiday season.

Tomorrow from 10am-12pm the annual “Celebration of Love” will be held at the Cathedral of Faith. During the entire month of December 5,000 grocery carts full of food items will be distributed to families in need. Items range from turkeys, vegetables, milk, bread, pastries and fresh produce. In addition to families in need, Reaching Out Food Center has partnered with nine local public schools to help students and their families with monthly distributions.

“This year, we’ve seen a much greater demand in our services,” said Jim Gallagher, Reaching Out’s director. The mostly-volunteer organization, which operates out of a debt-free, 16,000 square foot distribution center on the Cathedral of Faith campus, provides emergency food and basic life necessities for over 120,000 economically disadvantaged.”

The event itself takes about two hours to pull off and with the help of hundreds of volunteers, more than 5,000 vouchers are expected to be given out with no one in need being turned away.
