Val Kilmer will be in San Jose this December to introduce and screen a taping of his one-man show, CITIZEN TWAIN. Kilmer, who began his career on stage before becoming a star of the big screen, played the part of Samuel Clemens in front of live audiences all over the U.S. during the show’s original run.

Titled CINEMA TWAIN, the film is slated to show on Dec. 29 and 30 at the San Jose Stage Company in the SoFA District.

Known for his iconic turns as Jim Morrison in The Doors, the Caped Crusader in Batman Forever and Iceman in Top Gun, he has also demonstrated a knack for live theater. In fact, Kilmer got his start on stage before making the jump to the big screen.

He is among the youngest individuals ever accepted to the drama division of Juilliard. During his time at the world-class acting academy, he co-wrote his own play, titled How It All Began. In 1983, he made his Broadway debut, working alongside Kevin Bacon and Sean Penn.

Kilmer returns to his roots with CITIZEN TWAIN. In the one-man play, Kilmer portrays the author of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn—using Twain as a vehicle for discussing politics, family life and religion.

The play gives audience members a view of Twain that many have not seen before. Going into personal details about life and humanity is the premise of the show, and Kilmer wants everyone to know how much being on the stage once more as well as playing a prominent American figure means to him.

“I am very happy to be appearing at The Stage to present CINEMA TWAIN,” said Kilmer in a press release. “Talking about Mark Twain’s love of humanity after the show is pure joy.” After each screening, Kilmer will participate in a live Q&A with audience members.
