Party on, dudes. The World Dodgeball Society hosts San Jose’s Keanu Reeves Totally Excellent Dodgeball Adventure on October 22-23.

According to Jason Boloson, one of the founding WDS San Jose League members, the two-day competition will feature two different kinds of play: Random Draw Bronson and Last Man Standing.

Random Draw Bronson uses the old school 8.5” rubber balls. Players are able to apply a pinch to them as they throw to make the ball curve in crazy ways, says Bolosan.

Last Man Standing is everyone for themselves until two players are left trying to eliminate one another.

Players can register individually for Saturday’s Bronson tournament for $15 and are placed randomly into six teams of six to eight players.

A Stay Puft tournament on Sunday uses a smaller rubber ball that doesn’t hurt or sting. The Stay Puft tournament is open to 12 teams consisting of 8-10 players with two females minimum per team. Registration is $150 per team.

Bolosan says there is recreation division for those just looking to play for fun, and an advanced division for those who play a lot of dodgeball and are a little more competitive. Both are open for registration until October 21 to everyone above 18, regardless of skill level.

But, wait dude, what’s with name?

Bolosan says that he and several friends named the tournament after the 1989 Keanu Reeves cult flick, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.

“After one of our league play games, we were all reminiscing on how cool Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure was and how it would be totally awesome to throw a tournament in hopes of getting teams to dress up like characters from Keanu Reeves’ movies,” says Bolosan.

The World Dodgeball Society originated in Los Angeles, where Bolosan said he first got involved playing tournament dodgeball.

“I have been playing dodgeball for about 4 years now and when I moved back to my hometown of San Jose, I really missed the friendly competition and just the silliness of dodgeball,” says Bolosan.

Bolosan got his friends involved with dodgeball and they started a WDS League in San Jose with the help of the Los Angeles chapters.

The San Jose league meets Wednesdays at Seven Trees Community Center, where teams go head to head against each other. For $55 a season, teams can have a roster of up to 20, with a minimum of five girls. The team with the most wins for the season are crowned champions.

According to the league website, the games use the softer “no sting” balls like ones used in the Stay Puft tournament.

“The tournament is all about fun. We will be jamming out to some awesome tunes, playing some dodgeball, and hopefully a couple food trucks show up,” says Bolosan.
