The man struck and killed by a train in Palo Alto Thursday night has been identified as 23-year-old Clayton Carlson, the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office said today.

Carlson, a Palo Alto resident, was struck and killed by a southbound local Caltrain around 8:40 p.m. about a half-mile north of the Churchill Avenue crossing, according to a Caltrain spokeswoman.

The medical examiner’s office said it would not release whether the death was considered a suicide.

The local train No. 190 had been making all stops and had originally departed from San Francisco at 7:30 p.m.

Passengers on the train were transferred to another southbound train at 9:22 p.m.
