As part of their ongoing commitment to promoting classical and related guitar music, the South Bay Guitar Society welcomes flautist Viviana Guzman and guitarist Jeremy Jouve on June 22nd and June 24th to perform pieces from a soon to be recorded album. Performing a French-themed collection of songs including classical standards by Bizet and Faure, as well as new works by contemporary composers Atanas Ourkouzounov and Roland Dyens, Guzman and Jouve will then head to Skywalker Sound in Marin to start recording the album, which is scheduled to be released in early 2012.

Born in Chile, Guzman, who now lives in Half Moon Bay, is a graduate of Julliard and has studied with some of the great flautists of her time including Jean-Pierre Rampal and James Galway. Giving over 80 concerts a year, she tours extensively and has performed in 118 countries. Known for her infectious energy, technically proficient skills and vibrant playing style, Guzman is a local musical treasure.

Coming to the Bay Area from his native France, Jouve is an award-winning guitarist who has performed on stages and festivals around the world including Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Hall, Germany’s Iserlhon Guitar Symposium and the Saltillo International Guitar Festival in. His musical interests are diverse and broad and he performs in many different styles including classical, jazz, Indian and contemporary.

Regular companions throughout much of the history of music, including being regularly paired in Renaissance music and early tangos, the guitar and flute—and in earlier times, the lute and recorder—have a long, interesting life together that Guzman, Jouve and the SBGS will help bring to light.

Viviana Guzman and Jeremy Jouve perform on Wednesday, June 22 at the Cambrian Branch Library at 6:30pm and on Friday, June 24 at the Joyce Ellington Branch Library at 4:15pm. Both performances are free. The duo will also perform live on KKUP 91.5 FM on Friday, June 24 at 2pm.
