A shooting occurred at around the lunch hour, outside the South Bascom Avenue McDonalds. According to police and eyewitnesses, one man walked over to another man, shot him at point blank range, and took off running down the street. The victim, described as a man in his 20s, was taken to the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and put on life support. It is unknown whether he will survive. Police are still looking for the shooter, described as a Hispanic male in his late teens or early twenties.
Police shut down northbound lanes on South Bascomb as they investigated the crime, and nearby Del Mar High School was placed under lockdown until 2:30 pm. Police are still investigating the shooting, and believe that it was gang related. What they do not know is if the victim was targeted specifically, or whether he was picked at random as part of some gang initiation. According to Officer Jose Garcia of the SJPD, “Gangs will carry out certain violent acts, whether it’s targeting somebody intentionally or sometimes just randomly as part of a gang initiation.”
Two gangs, the Norteños and the Sureños, are active in the area. Police expect to know more once the victim is identified.
