Grease
The movie musical “Grease” opens Tuesday night at the San Jose Center for Performing Arts with Eddie Mekka (“Laverne & Shirley” and “Catch Me If You Can”) as DJ Vince Fountaine and Matt Nolan and Alyssa Herrera as Danny and Sandy.
Wednesday:
The 39 Steps
Scottish author John Buchan first published the adventure novel “The Thirty-Nine Steps” in 1915. Since then, there have been four film adaptations including Hitchcock’s 1935 version, which some consider to be one of the greatest British movies of all time. According to IMDB, Robert Towne (“Tequilla Sunrise”, “Days of Thunder”, “Chinatown”) is directing a remake to be released later this year. In the meantime, TheatreWorks Silicon Valley is putting on Patrick Barlow’s high-speed Broadway comedy adaptation of the “man on the run” caper.

The Zahsman Murders
Not everybody gets the privilege (or burden?) of jury duty, but a new play by Berkeley playwright Jim Colgan puts the audience in the jury box for a murder case against a serial killer. The Arclight Repertory Theatre presents a world premiere of “The Zahsman Murders.”
Friday:
Made Up Theatre Grand Opening
Fremont will soon be home to a new black box theatre specializing in the improvisational arts and aptly named Made Up Theatre. Friday night’s grand opening is a double-header with two high-octane shows (8pm and 10pm) featuring Five Play Improv, the South Bay’s hottest new improv comedy troupe. They’ve been packing houses at the San Francisco Improv Festival and the Engames Improv Competition since forming a year ago. With their new space, they’re offering improv workshops for all ages starting later this month.
