Get Fit
Gyms are abundant in Silicon Valley. National chains like Bally and 24 Hour Fitness have multiple locations, alongside neighborhood favorites like Almaden Valley Athletic Club and Los Gatos’ Jewish Community Center. If you’re scared off by the price of membership, the YMCA offers more affordable membership, and with 10 branches across the valley, there’s really no excuse. If you’ve got some weight to lose, there are several Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig outlets to help guide you through the process.
Quit Smoking
Whether this is your first time quitting or your 50th, Breathe California is a good place to start. Breathe California of the Bay Area is a lung health organization that hosts numerous quit smoking classes to help ease you into it. Doctors and pharmacists at places like San Jose Medical Group or your local pharmacy can point you in the right direction of doctors or medications.
Do Something Daring
It’s never too late to discover the joys of being an adrenaline junkie. Day trip down to Hollister to skydive, hit the dirt at the Motorcycle County Park in San Jose or take on one of Great America’s break-the-sound-barrier, bugs-in-your-teeth coasters or thrill rides.
Save Money
Big spenders can find a way to keep their pockets lined with cash. Save on retail goods with the power-shoppers at the McCarthy Ranch outlets in Milpitas. Or, if fashion is your kryptonite, try a used-clothing boutique like Crossroads Trading Company on San Carlos or Blossom Hill—you might be surprised what you find.
Be Charitable
Sacred Heart Community Service has long been the hub for doing good in the San Jose area, a direct link to those in need of food, clothing, and housing and employment assistance that is run almost entirely by volunteers. If you have a special skill you’d like to share, a Craigslist search reveals volunteer opportunities in the South Bay doing everything from teaching music to cuddling animals at the ASPCA.
Find a New Job
Most job-hunting is done from the couch these days, but you can get the upper hand if you’re looking to make a major change in careers. Check in with the San Jose Public Library system first: many branches host job-skills classes that can help with everything from interview preparation to resume building for non-English speakers.
Get (Further) Educated
One thing we do right around here is education. If you’re looking for a certification, West Valley College and De Anza College have tons of programs to help get you in, out, and on your way up the ladder in no time. If you plan on going back to school after a leave of absence, you can always enroll at San Jose State. No guarantee you’ll be able to get into all those frat parties you missed out on, though.
Get A Date
Silicon Valley’s got the hook-up for hookups, with speed-dating and singles mixers that cater to everyone from professionals to people of similar faiths to scuba-diving enthusiasts. (Well, maybe not that, but there’s probably one somewhere). Most Bay Area-based dating services like It’s Just Lunch and Urban Diversion host several events in the South Bay.
Get Organized
Professional organizing is a career that many would have laughed at ten years ago, but it’s grown to be a service some people can’t live without. Organizing teams and agencies like The Time Butler and Serenity Now can help you get everything from offices and financial records to more abstract things like time and sanity in order.
Travel
Anyone who has grown up in San Jose or spent great gobs of time here can tell you that it’s hazardous to your health to stay put for too long. As wonderful as it is, sometimes we all need a change of scenery. There are tons of travel opportunities for every budget, with agencies like Peak Travel Group in Willow Glen and day trips organized through local community centers.
