A central spot in downtown San Jose’s SoFA district will soon be home to a completely new agenda, of sorts. First to Market, dedicated to American regional comfort food, plans to open at the former location of Agenda, at 399 S. First St., San Jose, later this month.

The name First to Market plays on the restaurant’s location (at the corner of S. First St. and San Salvador, with Market St. just around the corner).

San Jose natives Jenn Lin and Joe Gradillas, along with chef Domingo Wolbert, are opening the new eatery.

In a video posted on the restaurant’s Facebook page, Linn described how First to Market will approach American regional cuisine, a potentially amorphous concept. As she notes, “American food” typically brings to mind hot dogs and hamburgers—and nothing else. Although those staples won’t be excluded, the menu will focus on comfort foods and also be “game heavy,” with offerings such as bison tartare. Grits, a comfort food favorite that Linn describes as “pretty magical” when prepared the right way, are likely to appear on the menu.

First to Market is in the midst of an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds that will give the restaurant a little bit of a financial cushion in those crucial first months.

Pledge incentives, for donations which start at $25, include gift cards for the new restaurant or admission to First to Market’s soft opening, planned for Feb. 19.
