The U.S. Olympic team has brought some of the world’s best athletes to London, in no small part because of Californian athletes. This year’s entire U.S. Olympic squad consists of 530 men, women and gymnasts, 128 of whom are from California. Of that group, 71 hail from the Bay Area. South Bay athletes have also earned medals in some events:

• San Jose native Marti Malloy took home a bronze medal July 30 in the women’s judo competition being held at the London Olympics. Malloy managed to beat Italy’s Giulia Quintavalle for the bronze after suffering a defeat to Corina Caprioriu, of Romania, in the semifinals.

• San Jose swimmer Scott Weltz placed fifth August 1 in the men’s 200 meter breaststroke. Weltz is a Bellarmine Prep graduate. The London Olympics is his first international meet.

• 16-year-old table tennis player Ariel Hsing recently lost the women’s singles third round to Xiaoxia Li of China 2 to 4 on August 29. She faced Yadira Silva of Mexico in the first round and Xia Lian Ni-Danielsson of Luxembourg in the second. She currently attends Christian Valley High School in San Jose.

• Track and Field participant Michelle Carter recently placed fourth in the Women’s Shot Put Qualification at a distance of 18.63 meters. Carter then went on to the finals, where she placed in sixth place with a distance of 19.42 meters.

• Kerri Walsh Jennings and her teammate Misty May-Treanor won gold for the third time in the Summer Olympics against U.S. teammates Jennifer Kessy and April Ross in the women’s beach volleyball final. Jennings is a San Jose native.
