Some of the top gymnasts in the United States, including San Jose resident Josh Dixon, will compete in San Jose for the final U.S. Olympic Trials for gymnastics before advancing to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
From June 28 to July 1, HP Pavilion will host the men’s and women’s national teams, each composed of 15 members, who will compete for five spots on the Olympic team in artistic gymnastics, which includes vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise.
“It has been a while since both the entire men’s and women’s Olympic teams have been selected at the Trials,” said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics, in a release. “This gives our fans the opportunity to celebrate our sport at the highest level and give the athletes a wonderful send-off to London.”
At the trials, five men and women will be selected by the U.S. Olympic Committee’s board of directors to compete at the London Olympic games, which begin July 27. Immediately after the conclusion of the men’s trials, two members of the team will be announced and the final three will be announced July 1 with the women’s final session.
For the women’s competition, the individual all-around athlete is chosen based off her performance in all four categories for competition and will automatically make the Olympic team. The selection committee will pick the remaining athletes at the conclusion of the trials.
In addition to the Olympic trials for men and women, the 2012 U.S.A. Gymnastics Championships will take place June 26-27 at the San Jose Convention Center for athletes competing in rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline.
Single-session tickets for these trials are on sale now and can be purchased via Ticketmaster.com, by phone at 800-745-3000 or at HP Pavilion Ticket Office.
