Santa Clara City Council is determined to build a new stadium for the San Francisco 49ers, even if it means coming into conflict with Governor Jerry Brown. To show their resolve, Councilmembers voted on Tuesday night to appoint a new stadium authority, even though the Governor wants to take the city’s redevelopment money to cover the state’s budget deficit. The decision came with a message for Sacramento: “We intend to keep our RDA funds.”
Of course, Brown may choose to ignore them, or possibly even pay closer attention to a message from Santa Clara Plays Fair, which opposes the stadium. While Lisa Lang of the 49ers says that the team expects the city to contribute its $42 million to the $937 million project, City Council may have to find another source of funding. With no Plan B, Santa Clara may have to resort to collecting private donations instead.
