Luck Plays the Biggest in the Big Game
Quarterback Andrew Luck was nearly flawless in Stanford’s 48-14 drubbing of Cal on Saturday, completing 16 of 20 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns. But his 58-yard run in the first quarter might have been his “Heisman Moment.” About 40 yards into his run, he knocked Cal safety Sean Cattouse to the ground and continued down the sidelines to set up a Stanford touchdown drive. The Cardinal scored in its first eight possessions and tied a Big Game record with 48 points scored. Stanford hosts Oregon State on Saturday, and a win could mean a trip to the Rose Bowl for the Cardinal.
Press, Stanford One Step Closer to College Cup
Christen Press scored twice as the Stanford women’s soccer team beat UCLA 3-0 to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. Press, who leads the nation with 25 goals, is now one shy of the Stanford single-season record held by Kelley O‘Hara. Press was also announced as TopDrawerSoccer.com Player of the Year on Thursday, an award that she shared with O’Hara a year ago. The Cardinal will host Florida State on Friday at 7 p.m., and the winner will advance to the College Cup to be played from Dec. 3-5 in Cary, N.C.
Spartans Stun Ducks in Final Seconds
Justin Graham’s go-ahead three-point play with 2.8 seconds to go lifted the SJSU hoopsters to a 75-72 victory over Oregon on Saturday. It was the Spartans first win against a Pac-10 school since 1992, according to Spartan athletics. Guard Adrian Oliver scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half, and true freshman Keith Shamburger also had 19. SJSU (3-0) goes on the road to play CSU Bakersfield on Wednesday.
Sharks Lose Three Straight
A three-game losing streak, capped by a shutout loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday, has the San Jose Sharks searching for answers. The Sharks blew two-goals leads to Colorado and Dallas, losing both games in overtime, before allowing Columbus center Rick Nash to record a hat trick in the Blue Jackets’ 3-0 win. The Sharks (9-6-4) take on the Blackhawks on Wednesday at HP Pavilion.
Rainbow Warriors Dominate Spartans
The SJSU football team’s season can’t end quickly enough after another blowout loss, this one to Hawaii on Saturday at Aloha Stadium. Quarterback Bryant Moniz broke the Hawaii record for passing yards with 560 to help the Rainbow Warriors trounce SJSU 41-7. This season, the Spartans (1-10) have allowed 44 touchdowns and scored only 16. Mired in an eight-game losing streak, the Spartans host Louisiana Tech on Saturday.
