Western Motel
2250 El Camino Real
Santa Clara, Ca.

Achingly beautiful, the Western Motel neon sign is a survivor in a world that relishes tearing down achingly beautiful things.

In 1948, the Western Motel opened on El Camino with 15 units. In 1959, the sign depicted above came into being, providing glowing support to the theory that 1959 was the the apex of Western Civilization (particularly concerning style). And that all change is for the worse.

The current owner, Abe Totah, is maintaining sign and motel admirably. You can bet dollars to donuts the next sign will not look as good . . . it will be cheaper and uglier. And so it goes.
