Mark's Hot Dogs
1920 Alum Rock Ave.
(408) 926-0923

It is disconcerting and wonderful at the same time . . . to encounter a hot-dog stand in the shape of an orange. Mark's has been boiling dogs since 1936, and has garnished a coveted City Landmark status (481-19-002, The Orange, Roadside Vernacular, c1936). It is slated to relocate in the year 2000, to be replaced by housing.

Mark's will be moving to the Willow Glen business district. A building permit has been approved for a 37-foot diameter orange to be constructed on Lincoln Ave. Car hop services will be expanded into a "double-decker" arrangement, and a large tethered hot-dog dirigible will drift overhead.

Just kidding.
In fact, Mark's will not be moving to Willow Glen. On March 30, 2000, I received a nice email from Demos Pantelides, the owner, that Mark's will, in real fact, be moving to a lot on S. Capitol, about 250 feet south of Alum Rock Avenue (across from Jack in the Box).

Carhop service will be available for 8 cars, and tables/chairs for up to 20 people. Look for it by late summer of 00. I will be there for a review. ug
