Description
Michael Franti has come a long way since his days with socially conscious political rap group the Disposable Heroes of Hipopricy. After he disbanded the group in 1994 and formed Spearhead, he introduced elements of funk, soul and reggae into the mix. Through the years, Spearhead have become less hip hop and more of an amalgam of reggae, Afrobeat, soul, island music, rock and dancehall—kind of a catch-all dance band. But the biggest change to modern day Spearhead is the tone. Franti's music is downright joyful. He may still be a major political advocate interested in drawing attention to the injustices of the world, but songs like 2008's hit single "Say Hey (I Love You )" are happy toe-tappers. - Aaron Carnes sanjose.com
