Description
Australia's Hiatus Kaiyote has been getting major buzz in the States with their innovative take on soul music. The quartet can count Prince, Animal Collective and Erykah Badu as fans. It isn't so much the kaleidoscope of genres the band weaves through-jazz, trip-hop, flamenco, electronica-it's more about the space they create in their music. It's smooth, wandering, formless, yet comes together in an almost poetic, intuitive manner, anchored by singer Nai Palm-her voice suggesting a not-quite-unhinged Amy Winehouse. The dreaminess of the music pulls together their sincere gift for both earthy and outer-space grooves. (Aaron Carnes)
